It’s easy to feel like our happiness gets robbed from us sometimes. Life may not go our way, the unexpected happens, we feel bad about ourselves…the laundry list of life’s calamities goes on. As a result, these “happiness thieves” can eclipse the plethora of good in our lives that inhibit us from our instinctual human desire to find our happiness. That can change today — it all starts with you.
People think happiness is something that just happens to them. It requires effort to make our malleable hearts and minds to love and accept ourselves. You don’t have to wait for happiness to show up at your door, these ten simple actions will help you embrace the amazing person that you are right now.
Learn Something New
You might feel like you’re unhappy because you’re in a rut or a bit of a routine. Picking up a new hobby is a fast way to break out of your routine by diverting your attention on learning something new like the playing the guitar, absorbing a new language, playing chess for your first time. It will not only be a new challenge for yourself, but it will also instill confidence in your abilities to be more willing to try some of the infinite amount of things that the world has to offer.
Take Care of Yourself
Eating a well-balanced diet is going to fuel your body the proper way to perform the best it can. With that being said, every girl needs her fix of chocolate and indulgences every once in awhile so never forget to reward yourself too. A side order to nutrition is to keep your body moving. Socialize your work outs, go with friends to the gym, take zumba classes, go on a hike, take the dog on a 20 minute walk instead of a 5 minute walk. Endorphins will release and you will instantly feel better. Give yourself a little boost by breaking out that Nordstrom dress you only save for special occasions on a random Wednesday to work to wow your co-workers! Get a haircut — do I sound like your mother yet?!
Divert the attention off of your problems by seeking out a friend, relative, or a stranger who is having problems of their own. Make a goal to call, email, write a letter, or give a gift to someone new everyday to let them know you are thinking about them. Writing a letter is my favorite — old school but always effective!
Replace Your Negative Thoughts
Condition yourself to replace any “I can’t do it” or “I’m not good enough” thoughts with a quality that is unique about you. Silence that voice in your head that is interrupting your happiness.
This one is broad, but it’s nice that it’s broad because you really can draw inspiration from anything. I personally really enjoy absorbing memorable moments from quotes, blogs, and books that help keep my mind stimulated and open to think from a perspective I never knew I could see from.
Don’t Compare Yourself
This is only harmful to you and you will never be someone else, never. If anything, compare yourself to the person you were yesterday, and improve on the person you are everyday. You are enough. You are perfect just the way you are.
It’s free! There’s actual science that proves that when you smile, it elevates your mood because you are actually releasing serotonin in your brain–groovy, right?! Seriously though, try it!
Keep Track of the Good Things
It’s easy for us to always focus on the bad which eventually just outweighs the good, we don’t even remember what we’ve done to earn certain things which jades our whole outlook on ourselves. Keep a journal and write down successes, achievements, proud moments that define you.
Life can be mundane. Spice things up by shaking up your routine, get in the car with your best friend and go for a getaway for the night, host an exotic dinner with different cultural foods, surprise somebody!
Have a Sense of Humor in Life
Learn to laugh at life, we’re not perfect, accept your faults and imperfections. You can get through anything.
